Vanishing Song Birds

I understand history as possibility...that could also stop being a possibility.  —Paulo Freire

The winds of extinction sing a mournful song
in the rustling grass,
where the bobwhite drums
and the meadowlark's melody is vanishing.

The winds of extinction sing a mournful song
in the dark forest shadows,
where the boreal chickadee's
voice is no longer heard
and the grosbeak
serenades a coming hush.

The winds of extinction sing a mournful song
over the troubled waters,
where the great scaup
quietly rests for the last time
and the harsh-voiced tern
skydives to death.

The winds of extinction sing a mournful song
while we wait
to find our voices
to sing for their rebirth.

Sunday Services for July 2

Sunday Services are 8:30 a.m. in the library and 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary unless otherwise noted. Nursery care, children’s and youth classes are concurrent with the 10:30 service.

8:30 ~ House for Hope

The Early Bird Service will host Sherry Kraemer in a presentation and discussion from a chapter from A House for Hope by Rebecca Ann Parker and John Buehrens.

10:30 ~ Saving One Starfish While the Forest Burns ~ Rabbi Neil Amswych, Temple Beth Shalom

What historically have been the reasons underlying both the destruction and the preservation of the environment by Biblically-based communities and how do these reasons affect our relationship with the planet today? By answering this question, we can assess whether today's religious communities and their adherents are appropriately active in this age of ecocrisis.

Neil Amswych has been the Rabbi of Temple Beth Shalom for three years since moving here from England with his family. He is the President of the Interfaith Leadership Alliance of Santa Fe and is working on a book about environmental theology.
