First Sunday Giving

The Recipient for September is the Pro-Choice Safety Network Fund. This fund was recently created out of necessity by the NM Religious Coalition For Reproductive Choice, a non- profit organization of which UUCSF is a member. The fund is designed to assist women with the numerous expenses involved in helping them research and make choices about a pregnancy; it does not cover any medical expenses.

Please note that since the first Sunday of the month is part of the holiday weekend, the First Sunday Giving program is September 12 instead.  Joan Lamunyon-Sanford, the Executive Director of the NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, will be at both the 9:30 and 11:00 am services to discuss this fund and the work of the Coalition. Please write your donation checks to "NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice" and insert them in the First Sunday Giving envelopes provided at services on Septem- ber 12. Thank you very much for your generosity in helping to fund this very important program.

What About Our War In Afghanistan???

This is the theme of a Public Forum scheduled for Friday, September 17 (Citizenship Day) at 7 pm in Fogelson Hall, sponsored by the UUCSF Social Justice Committee, People for Peace, Peace Action NM, and Veterans For Peace. Panelists will include: retired US Air Force Colonel Ed Rau, who served as military attaché to the US Embassy in Afghanistan and speaks the Afghan language, Dari; and Peter C. Schanck, retired law professor at the University of Kansas. Members of Congress are also invited.

Ample time will be available for questions from concerned citizens. This event is in accordance with Creating Peace, the 2010 Statement of Conscience just approved by the UUA General Assembly, which says in part, “We advocate a culture of peace through transformation of public policies.”

If you’d like to get involved in a UUCSF Creating Peace Task Force, please come to our 6 pm Monday, September 13, meeting of the Social Justice Committee at the church or just let us know. For information contact  Bob Stearns or Marion Seymour.

The World Peace Diet

Save the evening of Tuesday, October 5 at 7 p.m. to hear Dr. Will Tuttle, recipient of  The Peace Abbey’s Courage of Conscience Award, Dharma Master in the Zen tradition, and Unitarian Universalist with a doctorate from the University of California, where he has taught courses in creativity, humanities, mythology, religion, and philosophy.  Dr. Tuttle will speak in Fogelson on his best-selling book The World Peace Diet, exploring the invisible connections between our meals and our broad range of problems—psychological, social, and spiritual, as well as health and environmental. Dr. Tuttle offers powerful ways we can all experience healing and peace and contribute to a positive evolution of human consciousness.  Suggested donation of $10 with half the proceeds benefiting the UU Congregation of Santa Fe.
