“Community is the place where the person you least want to live with always lives…That person is always in your community somewhere; in the eyes of others, you might be that person.”― Henri Nouwen
Our shared journey is expressed at UU Santa Fe by four core experiences: becoming, belonging, engaging, and being. We tell ourselves that we create the conditions here that develop these four experiences. We promise to do these four things very well to benefit everyone who touches our community. Our theme this month is Beloved Community. Belonging is Beloved Community in action. So, are we good at True Belonging?
I think True Belonging is 'living with the person you least want to live with' and avoiding being that person in the 'eyes of others.' In our polarized and hostile culture, how difficult True Belonging has become! I don't know about you, but I have had to pay increasing attention to my language and how I label others to make sure that I am not guilty of 'othering.' Not easy, I can tell you. I fail often. I hope the resources below become as helpful to you as they are to me.
A curated list of challenging resources on Belonging. It's much harder than you think.
